Untouched since 1860s: roofing works commence at Brecon Cathedral

Round 2 delivery is live at Brecon Cathedral on the People | Passion | Priory project. Funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund , with the broader programme supported by the Welsh Government, Wolfson Foundation, Garfield Weston Foundation, Dulverton Trust, Benefact Trust, Swire Charitable Trust, CADW, Laing Family Trust and Headley Trust, among others.

South transept reroofing is progressing using locally sourced sandstone tiles. Some of the sandstone tiles haven't been touched since Sir George Gilbert Scott worked on them in the 1860s and 70s.  The new west entrance opened in March 2026; making the case for a new opening within 14th-century masonry required sign-off from Cadw, the Brecon Beacons National Park Authority and the Diocese of Swansea and Brecon.

The wider programme covers internal reordering of the choir stalls and fit out , new LED lighting throughout, draught proofing and a full M&E replacement including boiler. An interpretation plan will bring the cathedral's collections into public view for the first time. Jane Toplis Associates are advising on access across the site.

Oliver Architecture hold the architect’s appointment from the Dean and Chapter. Cragg Management are project managers, coordinating the wider consultant team including landscape architect, interior designer, quantity surveyor, archaeological consultant and structural engineers.

Completion is targeted for end of 2027
