Legacy project: delivered as part of our long-standing arts & heritage portfolio.
St George's Concert Hall in Bradford is the oldest purpose-built concert hall in Britain and the third oldest in Europe. This beautiful building boasts an amazing and colourful history and is home to the longest running orchestral season in the UK. The works included:
Removal and replacement of existing slate roof and structure, new structure and coverings.
Full facade stone restoration and window repairs/replacements.
Audience-focused upgrades to the auditorium with improved sight lines, seating and new retractable stage.
Improved front of house, box office, cafe and circulation spaces.
New lift and DDA compliance.
Activity Plan and Interpretation Plan to meet the NLHF requirements and deliver Exhibition Design and Fit out.
Our role
We were appointed as Project Manager to deliver the restoration and improvement works to the existing 800-seat theatre and auditorium. Our role included managing the project through the development phase and continuing into delivery, ensuring the scheme progressed on time, within budget and in line with heritage, operational and funder requirements. We worked closely with the client team to secure successful NLHF Round One and Round Two awards and led the project through the development phase, integrating design, activity, business plan and conservation planning.
Scope and Outcomes
The project focuses on safeguarding and enhancing the function of the historic concert hall while improving audience experience and long-term sustainability. Key elements of scope included:
Restoration and improvement of the existing 800-seat theatre and auditorium
Integration of sustainability initiatives, including rainwater harvesting and improved insulation
Delivery of apprenticeships and skills development initiatives
Support for a comprehensive activity and exhibition programme
We led the procurement and coordination of a multi-disciplinary consultant team, including conservation and new-build architects, landscape designers and lighting designers. The design team was led through to RIBA Stage 3, with design development closely integrated with activities planning, business planning and conservation planning.
