Our Role

• Construction of new building to house exhibition space, learning facilities and visitor welcome area.

• Conversion of the Old Deanery building into a café and community space.

• Conservation and restoration works to world-famous west facade stonework and Romanesque frieze, both pieces of international historic significance.

• Level access for all achieved via a new build entrance.

• Opening up and new landscaping to unify public realm around the site.

• New lighting scheme to enhance the Cathedral as a beacon and landmark.

• Delivery of comprehensive activity and exhibition programme to support learning and community engagement.

• Improvements to heating and lighting systems throughout.

Lincoln Cathedral is a Grade I Listed Building, a designated Scheduled Ancient Monument and is situated in a Conservation Area. Whilst very visible, the cathedral lacked accessibility (access was via temporary timber ramps) and there was no area for interpretation and exhibition. The Lincoln Cathedral Connected project included a new build element to house an exhibition space, learning facilities and visitor welcome, and conversion of an Old Deanery building into a café and community space.

We were the Project Managers (development and delivery stages), contract administrators and M&E Quantity Surveyor, managing 17 consultants.

• Coordinated extensive conservation and new build works, and archaeological investigations over burial grounds, securing CFCE and Scheduled Ancient Monument consents.

• Worked closely with client team on successful National Lottery Heritage Fund (Round 1 & 2) applications.

• Led procurement of consultant team including conservation and new build architects, landscape designer and lighting designer.

• Ensured design work was integrated with activities, business planning, and conservation planning.

• Conducted extensive consultation with statutory stakeholders and members of public and congregation, securing overwhelming support for the project.

Lincoln Cathedral has been using Cragg Management for the last six years in order to deliver Lincoln Cathedral Connected, a £16.5m NLHF sponsored project that has delivered significant heritage conservation and landscaping work, improved the physical and intellectual access to the building as well as providing a new educational suite, retails outlet and new refectory space.

Cragg Management has been instrumental in enabling this work to take place within budget - allowing for Corona Virus - on time. The Cathedral has worked with a number of staff from Cragg Management and has found them all efficient, proactive, experienced, professional and always willing to tease out what can appear to be an intractable problem.
