Project Overview

St Albans Cathedral has been a site of continuous Christian worship and pilgrimage for over 1,700 years. It stands on the site of the execution and burial of St Alban, Britain’s first Christian Saint.
The Cathedral and its associated buildings are Grade I listed and designated as Scheduled Ancient Monuments, reflecting their outstanding historic and cultural significance.

Project Scope

This National Lottery Heritage Funded project focused on improving visitor experience, education, and accessibility while protecting the Cathedral’s unique heritage.

Welcome Centre

  • Construction of a new Welcome Centre, now an exciting activity hub for the Cathedral

  • Houses the beginning of the interpretation journey, which flows seamlessly into the Cathedral

  • Incorporates discrete interpretation displays throughout the Cathedral to inform and inspire visitors without disrupting worship and daily activities

Chapter House & Learning Facilities

  • Installation of a lift to make the Chapter House fully accessible

  • First floor: Reordered space dedicated to education, with classrooms able to hold two classes simultaneously

  • Second floor: Adult learning space housing the library, lectures, and working groups

CM’s Role

CM worked closely with the Cathedral team to plan, coordinate, and deliver this transformative project. Their role ensured the new facilities respected the Cathedral’s spiritual and historic significance, while creating modern, inclusive spaces for education, learning, and visitor engagement.

Related Service

The project will deliver a new building housing exhibition space, learning facilities and visitor welcome, and will also convert an Old Deanery building into a cafe and community space.
