Programme

Our Role

We were appointed as Project Manager to develop and deliver a major heritage-led scheme with an overall value of approximately £5 million. Our role has included leading the development of the project brief, coordinating the design team, securing statutory consents and managing the Heritage Lottery Fund application process through to a successful Round Two award.

Project Details

Prior to the project, Brecon Cathedral suffered from significant accessibility challenges, with wheelchair users required to enter via a rear entrance and rely on an outdated stair lift to access the main worship space. Key building services, roofing and structural elements were also in poor condition, and interpretation and exhibition provision was limited, with nationally important artefacts displayed in unsuitable environments or not displayed at all.

The project includes:

Creation of a new highly visible, glazed entrance within the west façade to provide level access for all users

Comprehensive accessibility improvements throughout the Cathedral

Replacement and upgrading of heating and electrical installations with low-carbon systems

Re-roofing and structural repairs, including new stone tiling

Environmental improvements, including insulation upgrades

Creation of new interpretation and exhibition spaces within the Cathedral and the adjacent tithe barn

Consents & Funding

The project is funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. We successfully secured NLHF Round Two funding, alongside planning permission and listed building consent, enabling the project to progress into delivery.

Programme

Works are scheduled to commence on site later in 2025.
