Our Role

We were appointed to undertake the feasibility study and subsequently provided Project Management, Project Cost Management and Construction Management services. The project was delivered using a Design and Build procurement route.

Project Details:

The new gallery provides significantly greater access to the collection and touring exhibitions, not only through significantly improved display facilities, back of house workshop areas and print sales but also through the physical layout of the building with each floor accessible by lift.

CM developed the Photographers’ Gallery from concept through to completion acting primarily as the project manager developing the client brief, revising the design proposals following the recession resulting in a revised scheme that was on budget and fulfilled the clients brief.

The project involved the removal of the top floor of an existing office building, provision of 2 new floors and infilling of rear lightwell.

The interior space was converted to a new proposed gallery space including cafe and shop area.

Funding:

  • The Photographers' Gallery

  • Arts Council England

I am delighted to be able to provide a testimonial for Nick Cragg who was the Project Manager on our £6.5m reconstruction of The Photographers' Gallery on a tight site in London's Soho.

Nick worked with the Executive and Board for over 3 years managing the project. During that time we found that Nick was an extremely effective and reliable Project Manager, supporting the internal team with the benefit of his extensive professional skill and advice at all stages of the planning. His manner was collaborative - always providing us with a number of informed options to enable us to come to the right decisions.

When close to the end of the project (March 2012) our contractors went bankrupt, Nick provided calm and authoritative leadership to ensure we were able to complete the project in time for the public opening in May 2012.

We would have no hesitation in recommending his services.  The building which he helped us to create is now enjoyed by over 230,000 visitors per year.

The project will deliver a new building housing exhibition space, learning facilities and visitor welcome, and will also convert an Old Deanery building into a cafe and community space.
