Project Details:

The Thackray Medical Museum's main purpose is to engage audiences with the material heritage of the medical and healthcare industry, in order to increase public understanding of the history of medical treatments and products, and of the science research and development behind them. The museum is housed in the Grade Two Listed former Leeds Union Workhouse, which first opened in 1861 and subsequently became part of St James’s Hospital. It is an intentionally impressive building, constructed in the Victorian Gothic style, and overlooking Leeds Cemetery on Beckett Street. It forms part of the campus of St James’s Hospital, part of Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. The project will provide new exhibitions and provide essential repairs and environmental improvements to the building.

CM have prepared and secured the National Lottery Heritage Fund round 2 funding award. The project includes the restructure, refurbishment and conversion of the existing listed building, the insertion of a new main staircase and provision of new internal gallery spaces.
