Project Details:

The restoration and refurbishment of a Grade I listed modernist building including the creation of new gallery spaces, restaurants, bars and offices including educational facilities. The project also included the construction of two satellite pavilions for both office and performance/ learning space. The De La Warr Pavilion is a unique and nationally important Modernist building. The works to upgrade and preserve the building for future generations had to be sympathetic to its historic importance whilst also improving the buildings durability in the harsh marine environment.

Internally the works included the renovation of the gallery and auditorium, entrance, foyer and café/bar areas, as well as the creation of temporary gallery spaces. Externally the works involved the use of modern materials for the repair and replacement of damaged features. This included the replacement of all south (sea) facing windows due to extensive damage and leaking from exposure to the corrosive environment and repainting the entire building.

The satellite pavilions, although new build, had to blend seamlessly with the original building. This was successfully achieved by the excavation of the floor level to ensure the buildings were only partially visible. The pavilions provided invaluable additional space to the already successful ventures within the main building. This included a dance and performance space for production rehearsals as well as back of house and office facilities for the staff.
