Project Details:The capital works saw the medieval timber frame building (The Tree), which is grade II listed, renovated and restored and linked to a 1980’s Annexe by a new glazed extension. The Tree is a key artefact in the museum allowing visitors to explore the architectural detective points to understand how the building has developed over time. This has been greatly informed by the buildings works themselves with exploration works and dendrochronology forming part of the investigations.
The new spaces allow for staff room, kitchen and office, a large education room which allows the museum, for the first time, to accept a whole class for a single activity with direct access outside and to the museum allowing diverse teaching. A large meeting room encourages businesses to use the museum for non-traditional purposes such as conference but the room, by the use of tri-old doors, also becomes part of the large temporary gallery which allows unique exhibitions to be put on including work by local artists. Archive storage significantly increases space building capacity for the museum to grow and rotate exhibitions.
